Flooding in Thailand
Friday, October 13th, 2006It is apparently that time of the year when flash floods hit Thailand.
According to this report, Sukhothai has been hit.

According to this report, Ayutthaya has also been badly affected, and Bangkok is under threat.
Thai floods to cause havoc until end of October
This particularly wet season is expected to end come November. Let’s hope that this situation doesn’t put a damper on our plans.

The question of money
Sunday, October 8th, 2006After some googling, I have this to report:
Food and accomodation
1 x 1-litre bottled drinking water = 10B
1 x average meal at Khao San Road plus drink = 100B
1 x Big Mac meal = 100B
1 x average tuk-tuk/taxi ride around central Bangkok = 70B
1 x average Skytrain fare = 25B
1 x average aircon bus fare = 15B
Misc (books fashion etc)
1 x Levis 501 jeans (genuine) = 2350B
1 x Bangkok Post = 25B
1 x English novel = 350B
1 x working shirt = 150B
1 x T-shirt = 70B
These are average base prices for the above items. Hence, assuming 1SGD = 23THB and that we eat 3 x 100B meals, drink 6 litres of water and take 3 taxi rides alone (instead of sharing the fare of one ride) per day,
Cost of a day = 300 + 60 + 210 = 570B = about 25SGD
Cost of 8 days = 8 x 25 = 200SGD
This is just for food and transport. Do keep in mind that we are assuming that food and transport at Sukhothai is similar to Bangkok.
Accomodation costs of 1 night = 700B = 31SGD
Accomodation costs for 7 nights = 31 x 7 = 217SGD
This is based on the assumption that accomodation at Sukhothai costs as much as at Bangkok (rather unlikely) and that on 171106 we are not sleeping on the overnight bus ride back from Sukhothai to Bangkok (almost impossible). Hence we are overestimating in order to err on the side of caution.
Bangkok airport tax = 500B = 22SGD
Therefore,
Total cost of food, transport and accomodation for 8 days = 217 + 22 + 200 = 439SGD
We have not included entrance fees, bus rides from Bangkok to Sukhothai and back, travel insurance (if you want it) and other smaller miscellaneous items. Assuming they all cost about SGD 100, than the total cost would be 539SGD. However I would like to stress again that in this estimate we have overestimated the cost of some items, so the actual amount spent would most probably not be that much.
As for shopping, the individual will have to estimate their own possible spending.
Anyway does anyone know where’s a good place to change money?

This is a very good idea, but technically I would not yet have ORDed by then.
First question: How much baht to bring?
